The only North African and the only African among the honorees, Mounia Aram stood out at the Black in Animation Awards Show!

What is it?

It’s an important event in the animation industry that recognizes diversity and honors projects led by minority groups as a true achievement.

Who was on the jury?

The jury included some of the biggest names in the animation industry, such as Camille Eden (VP of Recruiting and Talent Development at Nickelodeon), Nicole Rivera (Vice President, Original Series Development at Cartoon Network), Lynne Southerland (Director/Showrunner), Sidney Clifton (EP at Jim Henson & Deluxe Animation, Supervising Producer at BWA Studios), Carl Reed (President, Lion Forge Animation), Jinko Gotoh (Producer, Netflix), and Marlon West (Head of Effects, Disney). Impressive!

Who is Mounia Aram?

Born in Casablanca, with family roots in Agadir, and raised in France, Mounia Aram is an animation specialist with nearly 20 years of experience in the industry. After studying Oriental Languages at INALCO – Paris, she had the opportunity to join ShoPro Entertainment, a Japanese animation company based in San Francisco. That’s how she began her career in the industry and never left it.

What’s her mission?

To make Africa a recognized destination for animation cinema. Throughout her career, she has been involved in many aspects of distribution and production worldwide—from Europe to Asia, the United States, and Africa.

She made a key observation: while certain cultures are well represented globally (such as Japanese animation), and some countries are renowned for the quality of their work (like France, Canada, or the United States), Africa was almost absent. Determined to change this, she founded Mounia Aram Company in 2019, a production and distribution company dedicated to African animation, African culture, and the continent as a whole.
